PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — At least two people are dead, and four others are injured, after a mass shooting Sunday morning at a suspected illegal underground bar in a North Philadelphia neighborhood.
Philadelphia police are investigating the incident, which took place at a home on Myrtlewood Street in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city. Capt. Christopher Bradshaw said the shooting victims include men and women and range from their early twenties to their early fifties.
Bradshaw said police arrived at the home shortly before 1 a.m. "At this point, we believe the house is an illegal speakeasy," he said.
Officers found a 53-year-old man dead inside the home. He had been shot in the head.
"Also when police arrived there were two other gunshot victims at the location."
Those two victims were taken by EMS to the hospital. One of them, a 41-year-old man who was shot in the chest and leg was pronounced dead. The second man, age 42, was hit in the hand.
"The second person is in stable condition at this time," Bradshaw said Sunday.
Bradshaw says three other victims from that shooting drove themselves to the hospital. "A short time after that three other victims showed up at Temple Hospital, and at this time they are in stable condition."
Those three include a 22-year-old woman who was shot in the leg, a 28-year-old man shot in the leg and hip, and a 33-year-old woman hit twice in the arm.
Police say it appears the gunshots came through the front door and window from the street. Bradshaw said investigators found 10 spent shell casings outside the home.
"At this point, the crime scene unit and the homicide unit has been notified, and they will be investigating this incident thoroughly."
He says investigators are working to find the people responsible for the shooting, though he says police have no clear information yet about any suspects.
