PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An 18-year-old student is facing charges after authorities found a gun and drugs in his backpack at school.

Juan Rivera was arrested just after 9:30 a.m. Friday at West Chester East High School. According to West Goshen police, an officer found a handgun in his bag, along with illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Several weapons and drug possession charges have been filed against him. Rivera will remain in custody until his arraignment.

Police say they found no indication of immediate danger to any students or staff at the school.

In a statement, the superintendent said school staff notified students of the arrest toward the end of the day over the announcement system “in as gentle and caring a way as possible.” Counselors will be available for students to talk to on Monday, if they are interested.
