LANSDALE, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Security is ramped up at North Penn High School on Wednesday after police said a student brought a firearm to campus the day before.

In a letter to the school community, Superintendent Todd Bauer said police learned that a student may have had a gun on campus while they were investigating him “for a different criminal offense” off school grounds.

When police officers arrived at the school, security personnel had the student in the security office. The 16-year-old was in possession of a 9mm handgun, and he was taken into police custody.

No injuries were reported. Officials do not believe there is an active threat to the school.

The teen is being held at the Montgomery County Juvenile Detention Center. He is now facing several charges, including possession of a weapon on school property, possession of a firearm by a minor, and related gun offenses.

In a letter to the school community on Tuesday, North Penn principal Kyle Hassler said the safety of students and staff remains the district’s top priority, and he said the school is cooperating fully with law enforcement.

As a precaution, there is an increased police and security presence at the school on Wednesday. Students will walk through weapon detection scanners before entering the building.
