UPPER MAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The company responsible for a leaking pipeline in Bucks County has been ordered to hand out bottled water to people in Upper Makefield Township.
Sunoco's parent company Energy Transfer confirmed the leak in the Twin Oaks jet fuel pipeline in January, but neighbors say it's been a problem for some years.
Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection issued the water order on Thursday. The agency also said the company must install 100 home water treatment systems in the Mt. Eyre Manor neighborhood. Tests have shown petroleum contamination in soil and groundwater in the area, as well as in several wells and homes.
Energy Transfer says it's working with officials to address the situation and ensure all impacted areas are fully remediated.
Sen. John Fetterman and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick have called on federal regulators to shut down the pipeline until "threats to public safety" are resolved.
