PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police said a suspect wanted in connection with the death of an off-duty officer on Sunday has been identified.

Officials said they know who the suspect is in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Officer Alhassane Barry and have been in contact with his attorney. However, they are waiting to release the suspect's name until after he is formally charged.

Barry was off-duty when he and another man were shot just before 4 a.m. Sunday, after police said a fight broke out at an after hours hookah lounge at 73rd Street and Elmwood Avenue, in the city’s Eastwick section. Officials said the fight, involving Barry, a 35-year-old man and the suspect, spilled outside the lounge.

The other victim, a 35-year-old, was shot several times and treated at a nearby hospital.

Barry was laid to rest on Monday. At his funeral service, his sister Idiatou Barry said her brother will be sorely missed.

“My brother is a really friendly person, he is really sweet and he is a generous giving person. We are very proud of him, very proud,” she said, before speaking out against gun violence, calling it pointless.

“I'm just begging for us to stop, stop the senseless arguments, stop the senseless fights. Let’s not argue or fight over things that don't really matter the next day, especially bringing guns into it. It's never, never necessary.”
