PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An SUV slammed into a Jamaican restaurant in Southwest Philadelphia Monday morning and burst into flames.

Police said a driver veered off Baltimore Avenue and into Caribbean Cuisine, a restaurant near 61st Street. Police believe he was trying to get out of the way of another car speeding up behind him.

Longtime owners Kaddie-Anne and Wade Murray are grateful none of their customers were inside. They said neighbors woke them up around 3 a.m. to alert them that the restaurant was on fire.

“We’re thankful that it wasn’t the daytime when we were operating, customers were inside or anything like that,” said Kadie Ann. “It’s material stuff.”

They have had the Jamaican restaurant for 25 years.

The driver sustained minor injuries but is expected to be OK.
