PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 17-year-old is recovering in a hospital after he was shot at Schuylkill River Park in Center City on Friday.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. near the park’s basketball courts, not far from where South 26th Street meets Delancey Place.

Police say a group of teens shot at another group, and someone on the basketball courts returned fire.

The teenage victim was shot in the left arm and is listed in stable condition. Police took three individuals into custody and recovered four guns from the scene.

Teenagers who were playing basketball at the time told our partners at NBC10 everything happened very quickly.

“We heard about 12 shots. They first started from the back of the court,” recalled one witness, “and then they went up the bridge, then they came back down. Then a lot of people just started running.”

They say they meet at the park every week and are shocked this happened. “You don’t really see this type of stuff in the neighborhood and we’ve been coming here for a while,” the witness said, “so it’s a huge shock to us.”
