DREXEL HILL, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The search continues for the person who stabbed and killed a 15-year-old boy Friday night. The Delaware County Fraternal Order of Police is offering a $5,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible.
Michael Garr, who was a sophomore at Upper Darby High School, was stabbed around 9:30 p.m. Friday on the 200 block of Bridge Street, according to police. A portion of the street was briefly closed for the investigation.
Christine Kirby, who lives on the block, described the incident: “I’m laying on my couch, waiting for my grandson to fall back to sleep, and I heard a guy yelling, ‘Help me help him! Help me help him!’” she told NBC10.
Kirby opened her door and saw a man helping Garr, who had been stabbed in his neck, she said.
“He says, ‘He banged on my car door and asked me to help him,’ saying ‘He was stabbed in the neck,’” Kirby said. “And I said, ‘Oh, my God.’ I was running to get another towel, and by the time I got here, I saw the police coming down.”
Garr died as first responders tried to help him.
“You know the family is hurt. To know they just lost their little boy — oh, my God,” Kirby said.
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Tim Bernhardt said authorities are working diligently to find the person responsible for Garr’s death, and they are seeking help from the public. Anyone with a tip is asked to call the tip line at 484-574-1157.
“I ask that anyone in that neighborhood — whatever you may have seen or heard, anyone that has videos or cameras — please call us,” Bernhardt said.
He said their work goes beyond just an investigation: “Michael was a 10th-grader at Upper Darby School District. Working with school district officials, they will be offering counseling service to anyone that may need it within the school district."
A motive for the stabbing is not yet known.
