DREXEL HILL, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A 17-year-old boy — hailed a hero for rescuing kids from a pond last year — was killed when investigators say a group of teens were playing around with a gun.
Upper Darby police say 17-year-old Anthony Alexander was fatally shot Sunday in an apartment in Drexel Hill.
Alexander was the same teenager who jumped into an iced-over pond last year, rescued two kids, and helped officers get a third child out safely.
According to an affidavit from Delaware County, a group of teenagers were on an Instagram live stream before 5 p.m. passing around two guns, when one fired and the bullet hit Alexander.
He was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries.
A 16-year-old boy was identified by witnesses and police as the one who had the weapon in his hand and ran off after the shooting. Police say he turned himself in on Monday with his attorney and mother.
According to the affidavit, he told officers he put his “hand on the trigger a teeny bit,” causing the gun to go off. It states he admitted to leaving the apartment afterward, but eventually invoked his right to remain silent.
The 16-year-old is being charged as an adult with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and weapons offenses, among other charges. According to police, he is being held on 10% of $750,000 bail.
