PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Former Temple football star Dion Dawkins gets paid to prevent sacks as left tackle of the Buffalo Bills. But he also took time to dish out sacks of healthy food along with current Temple Owls.

Temple's football team distributed packages of fruits and vegetables for people in the community at a drive-thru food pantry Saturday on the campus' Diamond Street lot.

Dawkins said he felt a strong connection to the neighborhood and set up the drive-thru because he knows not everyone is willing to ask for the help they need.

"They don't have to get out of the car, they don't have to be seen. They can just come and grab food and go home and keep smiling," he said.

Senior safety Amir Tyler said it's great to build a bond with his teammates and give back to the community at the same time.

"They hear us every day with our practice field and music and whistles. We just want to show them the same love that they show us, the hospitality that they have," Tyler said. "It's kind of a blessing just to give back."
