1812 Productions takes comedy and improv to a new level with ‘This Should Never Be A Musical’

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A comedy theatre company in Philadelphia is putting on an improvised musical reality show. … Think “Shark Tank,” but for musicals.

“We have a host who comes out, and she introduces our contestants, and they reach into the fishbowl and pull out a title. And then they have to pitch what that title is immediately, and then sing a song from that show, and the final musical that wins, we do a 30-minute version of that musical,” explained Director Jennifer Childs.

Childs said the actors and designers have to create everything on the spot, from the songs to the lighting and costumes.

“It will never be the same twice, that’s for sure,” Childs said.

“This Should Never Be A Musical” kicks off 1812’s 30th anniversary season. It runs through Sept. 27 at the Arden Theatre Company’s Arcadia Stage.
