CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Millions of people have lost their jobs or income because of the pandemic. Help is available for those who have fallen behind on their rent. But in Camden County, the deadline to apply for assistance is approaching.

People who are struggling to pay their rent in Camden County have until Tuesday, December 8 to apply for a share of CARES Act money that is still available.

Because this is federal funding, there are some specific requirements people must meet.

Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli said time is running out and the money is too, so don’t delay in getting your application filled out. The money is available on a first come, first served basis. He said many families are already being helped through the program.

“We have about a million dollars left, and we could probably make more available if the demand is there. But we need to spend this money quickly,” he urged.

In order to qualify for the Rental Assistance program, tenants must meet the following eligibility and rules:

Tenants cannot earn more than 80% of average Area Median Income (AMI). The annual income limits by household size are as follows:
1-person, $54,150
2-person, $61,150
3-person, $69,600
4-person, $77,300
5-person, $83,500
6-person, $89,700

Applicants will be required to provide proof of loss or reduction in employment or income.

No duplication of funds will be permitted. Apartments and/or landlords which are funded under the State's tenant assistance program or Section 8 are not eligible.

Landlords must agree to waive late fees and penalties accrued from April 2020 to September 2020, and the lease must have begun prior to March 1, 2020.

To apply, residents can visit the program's website. People can also call (833) 487-0462 with any questions they have.
