Toddlers hit with pepper spray at West Philadelphia daycare center, police say

Armed robbers used it while robbing the center in Haddington

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police said a group of toddlers and a pair of adults were attacked with pepper spray during a robbery at a daycare center in West Philadelphia.

Authorities said that at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, two or three people with guns robbed the Munchkins to Masterminds Daycare near the corner of 54th Street and Girard Avenue in the Haddington neighborhood. Police believe one of the suspects was a woman.

As the robbers were leaving with the iPad they stole, police said one of the intruders sent pepper spray into a common area where seven toddlers were. They are between 1 and 3 years old.

Pepper spray directly hit two staff members. Paramedics came and evaluated the children and adults, but it was not initially clear how serious any injuries were.

"What's wrong with the person that did this? You know babies are in there. There's no thought," Yvonne, who lives across the street from the daycare center, said afterward.

As of late Friday afternoon, no arrest had been made, but police continue to investigate.
