PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Dover, Delaware, is under a state of emergency after a tornado touched down Thursday night and swept through the city.
AccuWeather said the tornado touched down shortly after 6 p.m. near William Henry Middle School on Carver Road.
The storm knocked out power and traffic signals, downed trees, flooded streets and left extremely dangerous travel conditions. The areas hit the hardest were Division Street and Lockerman Street corridor, and parts of North Dupont Highway.
According to our newsgathering partners at NBC10, part of the roof of a Days Inn was ripped off.
Officials urge everyone to stay home and off the roads as they navigate the mess.
Other parts of the region were also hit pretty hard. In Pennsylvania, downed trees disrupted SEPTA service in Norristown and Radnor, and Amtrak power issues caused cancellations from Malvern Station to Thorndale Station. A flood warning is in effect until 1:45 p.m.
PECO is reporting more than 7,000 customers impacted by outages, with a large concentration near Newtown Square and Elkins Park.
PSE&G reported that nearly 3,000 of its customers were without power just before 9 p.m., particularly near Cherry Hill and Haddon Heights. As of 9:45 p.m., that number is down to about 1,000.
And Atlantic City Electric is reporting more than 3,000 customers without power, with a lot of people in the dark near the Atlantic City Airport.
