PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting in North Philadelphia early Friday morning. The victims were on the front steps when they were attacked.
It was around 2:30 a.m. when police responded to the Johnson Homes, a Philadelphia Housing Authority property at 25th and Berks streets.
Three men were on the front steps of one of the buildings when one or more shooters went up to them and opened fire, police said. At least five shots were fired.
“Four of the spent shell casings were very, very close to where the victims were supposedly sitting,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
One of the victims, 31-year-old Tamir Hill, was hit in the chest and torso and died. The two others, both 26 years old, were hit as well but survived. They were taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition.
It was also a close call for residents of one of the homes.
“We know one bullet went through the front door of a property, and the projectile ended up in the living room,” Small said. “There were individuals in that property; we checked on them, and they were very lucky no one was struck by gunfire.”
Police were not initially sure of a motive or if one or more of the victims were specifically targeted. They are looking for surveillance footage from the neighborhood as part of the investigation.
