PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The latest COVID-19 relief package sits unsigned on President Trump's desk, as millions of Americans face the reality of no income and possible eviction.
Federal unemployment benefits are now expired, and on New Year's Eve, the moratorium on evictions will expire as well.
The president wants $2,000 stimulus checks, but his own team proposed the $600 payments.
Democrats agree with increasing direct payments, but House Republicans blocked the move in a rare Christmas Eve session.
"It really just shows you how out of touch Congress really is with the needs of lost Americans that they honestly think $600 is going to do anything," said Dan Errshin, who is unemployed and leans on assistance.
Errshin is one of millions who stand to lose income without a relief bill signed. "That would be a phone payment, a car payment, and then I would have $150 left over so literally within a day."
He called the plan a slap in the face. "They missed the boat to really help us out already, and all they're doing at this point everyday that goes on that they don't pass something is just rubbing salt into the wound or, I wouldn’t even say salt at this point, glass," Errshin said.
President-elect Joe Biden called on Trump to sign the $900 billion dollar package, and said he's ready to pass more stimulus once his administration takes over.
Trump is currently in Florida. The House is set to meet again on Monday, ahead of a federal government shutdown deadline.
