UPPER DARBY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A suspect is in police custody after officials say the individual tried to break into a house in Upper Darby and then fired shots at an officer.

A resident on Terrace Drive told KYW Newsradio that the suspect had tried to break into the house he lives in with his grandmother. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt verified his account.

The resident called 911 and when police arrived, the suspect started firing at officers. He said cops ducked behind his grandmother's car for cover.

The shots were fired toward the officer shortly after 1 a.m. in the neighborhood, which is just off of West Chester Pike.

However, the officer was not hit. The cop was still taken to the hospital for minor, undisclosed injuries.

Initially, authorities believed the officer had been shot, so law enforcement from Upper Darby and nearby communities flooded the neighborhood. It was a massive police response that included K-9s and a police helicopter.

The suspect was at large until around 3:30 a.m., when Upper Darby police announced someone was taken into custody. A Pennsylvania State Police helicopter flying overhead used thermal imaging to locate the suspect, who was hiding under a swing.

Police did not identify that person.

In addition to shots being fired at the officer, Bernhardt said two other cops were hurt. One hurt his hand during the struggle to arrest the suspect. Another officer from a neighboring police force was bitten by a K-9.

This is a developing story. Stay with KYW Newsradio for the latest.
