Vaccinations required for Philadelphia City Council, staff

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia City Council will require COVID-19 vaccinations for councilmembers and staff by mid-September.

The mandate comes straight from the desk of Council President Darrell Clarke, as many state and federal entities have imposed their own vaccination requirements.

Council Majority Leader Cherelle Parker said there are not currently any repercussions for people who do not meet the deadline.

Religious or medical objections can be submitted in writing.

"They can request an exemption in writing with accompanying documentation citing what their religious or medical objection would be," Parker said.

Staff members who are unable to be vaccinated for whatever reason will be required to undergo weekly coronavirus tests.

"I've heard no pushback from any members of Council, and again it's the sense of urgency...a desire to get back in our building," Parker said.

The city is averaging 180 new COVID-19 cases a day. About 63% of Philadelphia adults are fully vaccinated, while 77% have received at least one dose.
