PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The 31-year-old man accused of killing four people, including twin brothers, in a crash on I-76 in the spring has pleaded guilty.
Through the sobs of the victims’ family members, Victor Spizzirri pleaded guilty Tuesday to homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle by DUI, and DUI with a controlled substance for the early morning April 15 crash on the Schuylkill Expressway.
Prosecutors say Spizzirri told investigators he was coming from a Russian Bathhouse after just breaking up with his longtime fiancé when he side-swiped an Uber driver's Tesla that was driving westbound on I-76 near Valley Forge and Roosevelt Boulevard exits, propelling it into a bridge.
Killed in the crash were 23-year-old twins Tucker and Chris Schimelfeing, their 24-year-old friend Michael Comerford, and 31-year-old Uber driver Jean Santana.
They say Spizzirri’s Rav 4 was traveling at about 87 miles per hour when he hit the Tesla — Santana was driving the speed limit.
Spizzirri’s car flipped several times. He was injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
They say Spizzirri cooperated from the beginning, giving a blood sample at the hospital and telling state troopers he had drugs in his system – which tests showed to be high levels of marijuana, cocaine, meth, and ketamine.
Spizzirri waived his preliminary hearing and will be sentenced in January, facing possibly decades in prison.
