Chestnut Hill water main break affects homes, businesses in parts of Northwest Philly

Water service resumes after transmission line breakage early Monday morning

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Water service is mostly back to normal in Northwest Philadelphia, where a water main broke early Monday morning.

After further investigation, the Philadelphia Water Department said a 20-inch transmission line, connected to a 30-inch line serving Chestnut Hill, Manayunk and Roxborough, broke around 5 a.m.

Water department repair crews were at the site of the break, near Cherokee Street and Hartwell Lane, all morning, working to get water pressure back to normal.

This is close to the Philadelphia Cricket Club and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. The school closed down for the day because of the water problem.

Homes and businesses in sections of the Northwest either had low water pressure or lost service altogether. Some residents said it took about four hours to get back to normal.

Phil Dawson, executive director of the Chestnut Hill Business Association, says there weren't any widespread closures. A few businesses were going to close, but then their water service was restored.

The Water Department says anyone with lingering issues can call them at 215-685-6300.
