PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Crews are still cleaning up the damage from a 20-inch water main break in Northern Liberties Sunday morning, which flooded multiple streets and shut down portions of a busy corridor.
The break happened on Fourth Street, near Girard Avenue, around 10 a.m. Sunday. Water gushed onto the street and filled some nearby basements. One car got stuck in the muddy street.
Some people even reported brown water. The Philadelphia Water Department shut off service for affected customers but as of Monday morning, no properties are without water.
A department spokesperson said the break has been isolated and only the affected transmission main is currently shut off.
Behind the gaping hole created by the break is the Engine 29 firehouse. Firefighters and medics had to relocate to other firehouses. The Philadelphia Fire Department assured service would not be affected.
Crews are trying to get the caked-up mud off Girard Avenue, which is still closed between Third and Fourth streets. Crews are also helping properties pump water out of buildings.
The Route 15 trolley is suspended eastbound at Broad Street and Girard Avenue until further notice.
Officials have not said how long they anticipate the cleanup to take. A full assessment of the damage and estimated repairs is still underway.
