Several injured in 2 separate stolen car crashes in West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — At least nine people were injured in two separate crashes involving stolen cars in West Chester overnight, taking place on opposite ends of Gay Street.

Authorities responded to the incidents around midnight, which both resulted in police chases.

The first crash of a stolen car occurred at the intersection of East Gay and Matlack streets. Police said the driver hit a light pole, metal fencing, a tree and other objects on the block before stopping.

Anthony Murray, who lives nearby, said he witnessed the aftermath. He said a woman was behind the wheel, and she was tossed out of the car. He said she was conscious and speaking but also confused.

"[It sounded] like something hitting a wall real hard, like a real bang noise," he recalled. "She knew her name and everything but she didn't know where she was."

The second crash, also involving a stolen car, happened less than a mile away, at West Gay and North Darlington streets. Police said it hit several other cars.

Occupants in both incidents were taken to the hospital. It's not clear how many were in each car, or if there were injuries in the other cars hit in the second crash. Their conditions have not yet been released.

West Chester police said both cars were stolen in other jurisdictions. They did not say whether there is a connection between the people in both cars.

Police have not yet said what led to the crashes. An investigation is ongoing.
