PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two brothers from West Philadelphia have been brewing up a plan to diversify Philly's beer industry by opening the first Black-owned brick-and-mortar brewery in the city. Now they have a new release that they hope will get them closer to their taphouse goal.

Richard Koilor said it's been a long and challenging haul trying to open the city's first Black brewery - especially factoring in the pandemic.

But the West Philly brothers have persisted. A partnership with a local brewing company, FCM Hospitality/Mainstay, allowed them to debut their first canned beers - an award-winning Nubian Brown Ale and a Prolific Hazy IPA.

"Our brown ale is really good," said Koilor. "You don't find much of them out there. And if you're tired of the of the over-hoppy super hazy IPAs, then ours would be the right pick for you."

Mengistu Koilor said they're hoping that the partnership, called contact brewing, will help them in their fundraising campaign.

"The biggest challenge for us is it's a capital intensive business at the onset," he said. "We're positive that we'll get there for sure."

For now you can purchase the beers at the Two Locals Brewing store online, or look for them at a local outdoor popup.
