PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Family and neighbors are mourning the loss of Penn State University student Billy Schmidt after he was shot and killed early Saturday morning in South Philadelphia.
Police said it happened around 1:30 a.m. near 20th and Durfor streets.
Video from a neighbor's porch camera obtained by our newsgathering partners at NBC10 shows 22-year-old Schmidt following two young men on the street, saying, "Give me back my phone." Then, gunshots rang out.
He was rushed to the hospital and soon pronounced dead.
"Over a phone. It's abhorrent. It's just unbelievable that someone would kill someone over a phone,” said one of Schmidt's neighbors to NBC10.
Schmidt's father told the station that his son was "a really good kid." The family said he was a rising senior studying communications.
No one has been arrested yet for the shooting.
