PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Cigarette smoking is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and respiratory issues. Despite that knowledge, addiction can be powerful and many smokers admit that they have tried to quit but failed.
A new report from the United Kingdom looked at thousands of smokers who kicked the habit or failed in their attempts, and there was one consistent finding: Those who tried to quit on their own had a far greater rate of failure.
According to their research, weaning with e-cigarettes combined with counseling was most effective, but the use of nicotine replacement and prescription medications also were helpful.
