PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A woman was shot by a stray bullet in North Philadelphia early Wednesday morning after gunfire broke out half a block away, investigators said. A bullet also entered a nearby home, narrowly missing a woman who was asleep in her bed.

Around 2 a.m., police were called to Sixth Street and Lehigh Avenue, where they found a woman injured in the middle of the intersection.

"Suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg," said Chief Inspector Scott Small. "She was in a lot of pain, was unable to get up, although she was conscious and talking."

Medics rushed the 25-year-old to the hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

A real-time crime camera captured the moment the victim was shot and collapsed as she was crossing the street, but there was no sign of a shooter. Police soon discovered the shots were fired a few hundred feet away at Lehigh Avenue and Marshall Street. Investigators located at least 17 spent shell casings from two different guns.

Around the same time, police learned another stray bullet flew through a window at Fairhill Street and Lehigh Avenue. The shot narrowly missed a woman who was sleeping in bed, "just by a few feet," Small said. She was not injured.

No one has been arrested in the shooting. Police are looking through surveillance footage from homes and businesses in the area as they continue their investigation.
