PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A water pipe burst in a North Philadelphia transitional housing unit Thursday, forcing nearly 30 women and children out in the middle of the night.

It was around 2 a.m. when the pipe broke on the second floor of the Drueding Center at Master and Lawrence Streets, officials said.

Dozens of women and children were forced out and ushered to a nearby childcare facility run by the Drueding Center, which is operated by Redeemer Health.

No residents or employees were hurt.

It was not immediately clear how extensive the damage was and how long it would take for the families to return. Restoration crews were seen arriving at the building around 6 a.m.

The Drueding Center provides services, including a pathway to permanent housing, for families that have dealt with homelessness. It was the first transitional housing program for women and children experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia, dating back to 1987.
