PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia is building “Hospitality Hubs” for the thousands of visitors expected later this month for the FIFA World Cup. They’re just part of the extensive preparations outlined today at a press conference to confirm the city’s readiness for the event.
For months, people have been asking the same question, “Is Philadelphia ready?”
Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett-Harley said the answer is yes but don’t take her word for it.
“Readiness isn’t something you declare. It’s something you demonstrate,” she said
She says the Roots picnic, drawing 80-thousand people over two days, was just such a demonstration.
Police commissioner Kevin Bethel has been reassuring for months the police can handle security and keep the rest of the city safe, touting tech tools such as drone diverters and language-translating body-worn cameras. He was joined in that message by his old boss, former commissioner Charles Ramsay, who now works for the host committee.
“Is it a challenge? Absolutely. But is it one the city of Philadelphia can meet? Absolutely,” Bethel said.
Parks Commissioner Susan Slawson revealed that there will be four stops en route to the Lemon Hill fan fest from Center City. At Love Park, Logan Square, the Oval and Lloyd Hall visitors will be able to use the facilities, get maps, water, sunscreen and first aid.
“When the world comes to Philadelphia, we’re always ready,” she said.
