PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The police chief of Yardley Township has been hospitalized after being shot late Wednesday morning. Authorities say the suspect, Colin Petroziello, has been placed in custody after an hours-long standoff with law enforcement including SWAT officers.
Police Chief Joseph Kelly is "doing well. He is in good and stable condition," said Bucks County District Attorney Matt Weintraub.
"He is in very good spirits. There has been an amazing outpouring of support...we're praying for Chief Kelly, for a speedy recovery."
Petroziello was barricaded inside an apartment at Yardley Commons during the standoff which lasted until about 3:45 p.m., according to authorities. Weintraub said Petroziello was found unconscious.
The shelter-in-place for the area has been lifted.
Residents in a nearby apartment building were evacuated during the standoff, as were people inside a nearby day care center. Police carried and took children from the day care center by hand to reunite them with families.
The police chief of Lower Makefield Township said that Kelly was shot in his ear and one of his hands, and is "extremely lucky to be alive."
Doctors at an area hospital are treating him. Weintraub said that Chief Kelly is conscious, alert and speaking, and he asked Weintraub to come and give the public an update on his condition.
Kelly had initially gone to the apartment after probation officers got into an altercation with someone inside the Yardley Commons Apartments. When Kelly arrived, Petroziello allegedly shot him.
“I remember getting the call this morning and the chills immediately ran up my spine," Weintraub said.
James Field, who lives in Yardley Commons, said he was stunned when he returned from the store and found a standoff there.
Petroziello is expected to be charged with attempted murder and other offenses.
