After a year of sheltering in place, many Americans are just itching to get out and travel.
But some countries are now either requiring tourists to provide proof of vaccination or allowing tourists with a COVID-19 vaccine card to avoid a mandatory quarantine.
“We’re seeing countries saying you can only come if you’re vaccinated, they’re developing this type of requirement,” said Melanie Lieberman, Senior Travel Editor at the travel website The Points Guy.
“We’re seeing it as a way of getting out of a quarantine. So if you can provide proof of vaccination, you don’t have to quarantine for two weeks or you can avoid some of the COVID-19 testing we've been seeing.”
While most people still do not have access to the vaccine, Lieberman says that this requirement could actually simplify travel.
“Throughout the pandemic we’ve been saying how it’s just not as easy as it was: you have to get tested many times, there are quarantine requirements. And so for some travelers the idea of traveling to a destination that requires proof of vaccine also might look like a ticket to an easier, less stressful experience.”
She says a recent survey found that most travelers want to visit places that require vaccinations in order to stay safe and healthy while on vacation.
Some countries are creating digital vaccine passports as a way for visitors to upload proof of vaccination and have it verified, as there is already a black market for counterfeit vaccine cards.
