When Valentine’s Day came around at the White House in 2021, the historic residence’s new occupants hadn’t even been there a month.

It had been 25 days since the inauguration of President Joe Biden, and the new first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, felt a display reflecting hope after a long, tough 11 months of pandemic-living and a very contentious Presidential election were much-needed.

To that end, she decorated the White House lawn with giant red, white and pink hearts emblazoned with words like “hope” and “love.”

As the COVID pandemic has dragged on into another new year along with the division in the country along party lines, Biden has reprised that display for a second straight year on the North Lawn of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

“I just wanted some joy,” Biden said one year ago to reporters about the display. “I think things have been so — with the pandemic — everybody’s feeling a little down, so it’s just a little joy, a little hope, that’s all.”

Biden will also celebrate the occasion by ushering 20 second-graders on a tour of the White House. The students belong to 2021 Teacher of the Year Alejandro Diasgranados of Aiton Elementary School. The students were asked to create Valentine’s Day decorations that now grace the White House’s East Landing, hanging from strings in the windows.
