Katie Sigmond, a 20-year-old who has amassed nearly 7 million followers on TikTok, has been charged with three misdemeanors and fined $285 after hitting the ball into the canyon.
The Arizona Republic reported that among the misdemeanors Sigmond has been charged with is “tossing items into the Grand Canyon, littering and creating hazardous conditions with disorderly conduct.”
Sigmond initially posted a video of her hitting golf balls on her social media platforms, but they have since been taken down from her accounts. However, the videos were reuploaded by other accounts.
The Instagram account for the Grand Canyon posted a frame from the video that showed Sigmond launching her golf club into the canyon, asking in the caption if it “really needs to say, ‘don’t hit golf balls into the Grand Canyon?’”
Since the incident, which took place at the end of October, the TikTok star has resolved her case through a collateral forfeiture agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona, the Republic reported. This allowed her to pay an amount instead of appearing in court for the charges.
In its post, the park shared it was alerted to the video from Sigmond by members of the public, resulting in Grand Canyon Law Enforcement eventually contacting "the individual responsible for the incident.”
"Throwing objects over the rim of the canyon is not only illegal but can also endanger hikers and wildlife who may be below," the park wrote.
