PITTSBURGH (KDKA Radio) — Pennsylvania State Police say there was an increase in total and fatal crashes throughout the state in the days surrounding the Thanksgiving Day holiday.
According to the annual report, 979 vehicle crashes were reported between Nov. 11 and Nov. 26, including four people killed, each in separate crashes, and 197 people injured.
Of those crashes, 73 involved alcohol, though none of the fatal crashes was alcohol-related.
It's a slight increase over last year, when 970 crashes were reported, including one death and 196 injuries.
The number of alcohol-related crashes, at 73, did rise sharply this year compared with 48 last year. And Pennsylvania State Police arrested slightly more people this year for intoxicated driving offenses (542) than last year (539).
Also among the 2023 statistics presented in the report:
— 10,590 speeding tickets
— 133 child seat violations
— 1,187 seat belt violations
