One of San Diego’s most trusted and beloved organizations, Meals on Wheels San Diego County, recently celebrated a tremendous milestone - 65 years of service — and while 65 is often the age people start thinking about retirement, Meals on Wheels is doing just the opposite.
In fact, the nonprofit is expanding faster than ever — with rising demand, new technology, and a state-of-the-art Kitchen and Senior Innovation Hub in Kearny Mesa that’s transformed the way meals and care are delivered across the county.
Last year alone, Meals on Wheels delivered more than 644,000 meals to nearly 5,000 seniors, helping combat hunger and isolation from the beaches to the desert communities of Borrego Springs. But as food costs rise and funding tightens, the need for connection and compassion is only growing.
Brent Wakefield, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels San Diego County, discusses the organization’s 65th anniversary, its new innovations, and what lies ahead for seniors across our region.
