The Padres lost a tough one against the Giants 6-5 on Wednesday night. The Padres' offense came alive early, building a 5-0 lead after their half of the 5th inning. Gavin Sheets drove in 2 runs in the 1st inning with a long triple that nearly left the yard. Jackson Merrill hit an RBI-double in the top of the 5th, and Gavin Sheets drove in two more runs on a single back up the middle that bounced off of Giants starter Kyle Harrison and ricocheted into right field.
After allowing just one run through 5 innings with a low pitch count, Nick Pivetta served up a 2-run homer to Matt Chapman in the 6th inning. With the Padres' bullpen having been used so much recently, Pivetta came back out for the 7th inning having only thrown 78 pitches and ran into trouble, allowing the first two hitters to reach base on a walk and a single. Jason Adam entered the game with runners on 1st and 2nd, and after striking out Patrick Bailey, Tyler Fitzgerald singled to load the bases for Heliot Ramos. The hot-hitting righty doubled to left field, bringing in two runs to tie the game at 5. Jung-Ho Lee then hit a sac-fly to take a 6-5 lead. The Padres threatened in the 9th inning, as Fernando Tatis led off with a single to left field, registering his third hit of the night. Luis Arraez then flew out to deep right center on a ball that Daniel Johnson made an outrageous running catch on, not only taking away extra bases from Arraez, but also preventing Tatis from advancing to second base. Manny Machado then reached on a blooper that fell right in between shortstop and left field, and the Padres were in business with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out for Jackson Merrill. After Merrill struck out, Tatis and Machado pulled off a double steal, putting two runners in scoring position with two outs for Gavin Sheets, who already had 4 RBIs on the night. Unfortunately, Sheets popped out to third base to end the game, and the Padres lost a golden opportunity to secure the series win and go for a 4-game sweep. The Padres can still earn the series win on Thursday when they send Dylan Cease to the mound to face Robbie Ray.
