The Padres lost a tough game to the Cardinals on Saturday night, which brought them another step closer to being eliminated from playoff contention. Manny Machado put the Padres on top early with an RBI-single in the 1st inning. That would be the only run that either team would score until the 7th inning in this pitcher's duel. Nick Martinez threw 4 shutout innings, as he continues to impress as a member of the starting rotation. But Pedro Avila ran into trouble in the 7th, giving up a 2-out 2-run single to Masyn Winn to give the Cardinals the lead. That was an especially tough moment for the Padres, as Fernando Tatis Jr. appeared to throwout Andrew Knizner at home plate from right field with plenty of time, but Luis Campusano wasn't able to hold on to the throw and allowed Knizner to score and put the Cardinals on top 2-1. The Padres weren't done though, as they rallied in the bottom of the 9th inning against Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, who walked the first three batters of the inning to load the bases with no outs. Xander Bogaerts then grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice to tie the game, and the Padres still had two men on with one out. But Fernando Tatis Jr. and Juan Soto had back to back strikeouts to send the game to extra innings tied at 2. After both teams failed to score in the 10th, the Cardinals tacked on 3 runs in the 11th inning and held on to win 5-2, as the Padres remained winless on the season in extra inning games. Michael Wacha will start for the Padres on Sunday as they try to win their 3rd consecutive series.
