The Padres defeated the Pirates 4-0 on Sunday to earn a 3-game sweep in Pittsburgh. Stephen Kolek was called up to make his first career start, and he was fantastic, allowing no runs in 5.1 innings of work while striking out 4. The Padres offense got to Pirates starter Andrew Heaney early. Xander Bogaerts delivered an RBI-single in the 1st inning and a 2-run double in the 2nd inning. Elias Diaz hit a solo homer in the 2nd inning as well, as Heaney lasted just 3.2 innings, and allowed 8 hits and 4 walks. The Padres' bullpen continued at an elite level, firing 3.2 scoreless innings. The Padres head to New York with a record of 22-11, and expect to get Jackson Merrill back perhaps as early as Monday.
