“Grey’s Anatomy” resurrected two characters that were previously killed off in past seasons and fans lost their minds.
On this week’s episode of the long-running ABC series, Mark Sloan (aka McSteamy), played by Eric Dane, and Lexie Grey, portrayed by Chyler Leigh, reappeared after dying in a plane crash during the show’s season 8 finale in 2012, reported US Weekly.
While the duo are not secretly alive, they did visit Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) in a dream as she continues her battle with coronavirus.
In a particularly emotional scene, Meredith shared how much she missed the two of them.
“That's kind of a waste of time ... because we never left you,” Lexie replied. Mark added, “Sometimes we're right next to you, yelling in your ear.”
Viewers were quick to share their delight over the return of the beloved characters.
“THIS. IS. WHY. WE. WATCH. THIS. SHOW,” wrote one viewer.
“pure happiness seeing these faces again,” added another.
“grey’s anatomy has given us so many wonderful surprises this season,” commented a third.
Lexie and Mark’s reunion comes after other fan favorites have returned to the series this season for cameos in Meredith’s dreams.
In November, Patrick Dempsey reprised his role of Derek Sheperd (aka McDreamy) after his character died in a car accident in 2015. While in December, T.R. Knight’s George O’Malley came to Meredith in a dream after the character was killed off in the 5th season.
Rumors have been swirling that the resurgence of the former characters is a hint that the show’s 17th season will be its last.
“Grey’s Anatomy” airs on ABC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
