Emilio Flores Márquez has some wisdom to share.
On Wednesday, the 112-year-old was certified as the world’s oldest living man by Guinness World Records.
Born on Aug. 8, 1908, in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Márquez was the second-oldest of 11 children and often had to take care of his younger siblings.
He credits having an abundance of love in his life and avoiding anger and hate as the secrets to his longevity.
“My father raised me with love, loving everyone,” Márquez told Guinness. “He always told me and my siblings to do good, to share everything with others. Besides, Christ lives in me.”
And despite having lost nearly all his hearing and undergoing surgery to have a pacemaker implanted 17 years ago, Márquezremains in good health.
While his wife of 75 years passed away in 2010, Márquez has two children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. They affectionately refer to him as “Don Millo.”
The love in his life was evident as Don Millo’s two children were with him when Guinness awarded him his official certificate noting the achievement.
"It's always an honour to celebrate these remarkable human beings, and this year we've processed applications from not one but two contenders for the title of Oldest living man,” said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records.
“I am thrilled to feature Sr. Márquez - born, interestingly, on the 8th day of the 8th month in the 8th year of the 20th century! - and bring his fascinating story to the wider public.”
The world’s oldest living woman is Kane Tanaka, who was confirmed at the age of 117 in February 2020. She is now 118.
