The New England Patriots are 2-7 on the 2023 season.

They’re 1-4 at home.

They’ve lost five of their last six.

Three of their best players are nursing long-term injuries.

They’re struggling with tackling and penalties.

They’re in last place in the AFC, and they currently hold the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The team’s president, the owner’s son, could be seen on Sunday’s FOX broadcast saying, “We’re not good enough.”

On Monday’s edition of WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was asked if this is one of the must frustrating seasons he’s ever had during his 48 (!!) years coaching football:

“It’s probably up there, yeah,” the coach said. “But we’ve just gotta keep grinding away here and turn things around this week.”

Is it tough to get guys to keep grinding away when the results aren't there?

“No, not this week,” Belichick explained. “I think we worked hard this week. Again, had our chances, but we just weren’t able to make enough plays to win.”

Belichick’s team, as mentioned above, has struggled all season long, game in and game out, with basic fundamentals, tackling, and penalties. He was asked if he thinks the Patriots are a disciplined team:

“I think some of our fundamentals are, yeah, they’re definitely inconsistent and we need to be a better, more consistent fundamental team. There’s no doubt about that. We work on that every week. We talk about it. There’s some things that are improving and some things that need to show up. Now every team in the league has missed tackles. Every game, so. But we had a couple bad ones on the long scramble play obviously. It hurt us.”

Belichick also spoke about frustrations from team ownership, JuJu Smith-Schuster’s drop at the end of the game, and more on Monday’s edition of WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show. You can listen to the full interview here.
