From the front office to the locker room, the New England Patriots have been overhauling their team inside and out this offseason. A question as to who will help lead them into this new era was answered Thursday as one of their remaining Super Bowl champions on the roster signed a well-deserved multi-year deal.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, Patriots center David Andrews has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in New England through the 2025 season. Andrews, a perennial team captain who has rings from Super Bowl 51 and 53, took some time off this past offseason to consider his football future. It now seems he’s committed to helping see the team through their latest rebuild, and now the team is committed to him as well.
In addition to a steady locker room presence who provides leadership in the building and in the community, Andrews played at a high level last season and will look to anchor a line that could feature at least two new positional players at guard and tackle. The Patriots drafted center Jake Andrews (no relation) last year in the fourth round out of Troy University. It looks like Andrews the younger will have to compete for backup center and potential guard duties as Andrews the elder is here for a while.
With so many new players, including rookie first-round QB Drake Maye, on offense, having a dependable presence like David Andrews will be key for the turnaround of the Patriots, who have a brutal schedule ahead of them in 2024. Luckily their center will be well compensated for his efforts.
