On Wednesday, just under a week before 53-man rosters need to be set, the Patriots traded Sony Michel to the Rams for two late conditional draft picks.
The Patriots had a ton of depth at the position and with the Rams needing a back due to injuries, the deal made a lot of sense for both sides.
Speaking after the joint practice with the Giants, some of his former teammates reacted to the deal.
“Definitely tough. That’s my guy," running back James White said. "Being with him since his rookie year, kind of helping him become the player he is today and he’s gotten better and better each year. It’s tough to see him go, for sure. He’s a hard worker, tough guy. Definitely puts the team first. Definitely going to miss him, but best of luck to him.”
He added: “Definitely like a little brother. He’s from where I am from, so us Florida guys we kind of gravitate towards each other. Just tried to take him under my wing a little bit and tried to help him be the best player and man on and off the field that he could be. Like I said, it’s tough to see him go for sure, but I am sure he will do great out there.”
Center David Andrews was even teammates with him at Georgia.
"I got to be a teammate in college, I knew what kind of person he was, obviously, you know, was super-excited when we drafted him -- got to be his teammate another three years, or three and a half, or four, whatever," he said. "So, Sony’s a great player, man. I’m super happy for him. It’s just part of this business.”
With Michel gone, it should mean increased roles for J.J. Taylor and rookie Rhamondre Stevenson.
