The Patriots are signing running back/wide receiver Ty Montgomery to a two-year deal worth up $4 million, according to CBS Sports' Josina Anderson.

The 29-year-old Montgomery played in 14 games for the Saints last season, carrying the ball 15 times for 44 yards and catching 16 passes for 95 yards. He was also a regular on special teams.

Montgomery's best offensive season came in 2016 with the Packers, when he had 457 rushing yards and 44 receptions for 348 yards.

The Patriots could use Montgomery in a similar role as the Saints did -- as a core special teams player who can also provide some depth behind James White as a pass-catching back. That would make him basically a replacement for Brandon Bolden, who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders this week.
