After dropping three of four to the Yankees over the weekend, the Red Sox were hit with more bad news on Monday. The team announced that first baseman Willson Contreras has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

Contreras had been playing through the hamstring issue for a few weeks, and interim manager Chad Tracy cited it as the reason Contreras was removed in the seventh inning of Sunday's blowout loss in the Bronx.

In a corresponding move, Mickey Gasper has been recalled from Triple-A Worcester just one day after being sent down to make room for the returns of Roman Anthony and Trevor Story.

Contreras leads the Red Sox in home runs (26), RBIs (79) and OPS (.900) this season. He had gone cold recently, though, going just 4-for-31 (.129 average) over his last eight games with just one extra-base hit and one RBI during that time.

Gasper, meanwhile, was red hot before his temporary demotion, hitting .423 with five home runs, 12 RBIs and a 1.710 OPS in his 11 big-league games in August. Gasper is playing first base and hitting second in Monday's series opener against the Mariners at Fenway Park.
