Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck will undergo surgery to put a plate in his cheek, manager Alex Cora announced Tuesday.
Houck suffered a facial fracture on Friday night when a line drive from Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka hit him just below his right eye.
Cora said there is no timetable for Houck's return, but that he is expected to be back this season.
Houck is 3-6 with a 5.05 ERA for the season, but he had seemingly turned a corner in his last two starts -- both against the Yankees -- prior to the injury, allowing three runs and nine baserunners in 10 innings while striking out eight.
