jones and mego: Dan Orlovsky joins the show to talk about what the Patriots need to do
When the Ravens signed Malik Cunningham off the Patriots practice squad last week, tackle Trent Brown didn’t hold back on social media.
“Go flourish where your talent is respected,” he posted to his Instagram story.
On Wednesday afternoon in New England’s locker room, Brown spoke exclusively with AtoZ Sports’ Sophie Weller further in detail about the quarterback moving onto Baltimore:
"It's funny because I told him months ago if they called… that's the team where he should go," he said about Cunningham landing with the Ravens. "And that's really good for him to actually get a real chance to play his real position."
After signing him as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft, the Patriots moved Cunningham from quarterback to wide receiver with hopes of using his athleticism to their advantage. He practiced at both positions throughout training camp, and shined in his first preseason game, at quarterback nonetheless.
The former Louisville Cardinal completed three of four pass attempts for 19 yards, with his lone incompletion coming on a should-have-been touchdown to Tre Nixon that was dropped in the end zone. He also ran the ball five times for 34 yards and a touchdown. Cunningham’s performance made New England fans wonder if they had a true dual-threat quarterback, and it made at least one of his teammates wonder why he wasn’t playing more in the regular season:
"I mean, probably the most exciting drive we had in that stadium was against Houston in a preseason game this season," Brown said on Wednesday. "My guy couldn’t even get a red jersey."
Brown went onto say that not only does he think Cunningham should have gotten a shot, but "everybody on the team did."
"He's a great athlete. He's a great quarterback," Brown continued. "Wasn't many opportunities he got to actually do it, but I definitely saw glimpses of him being a good quarterback. So, I wish him well. I wish him the best of luck. I'm glad he's in a better place."
