On Friday night, the Patriots selected Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson with the 38th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
New England addresses a massive need at running back at the top of the second round, as the team looks to take more pressure off of Drake Maye by giving him a more consistent running game.
At 5-foot-10 and 207 pounds, Henderson was a key contributor to Ohio State’s national championship winning season in 2024-25, making up one part of a two-headed monster in the backfield with Quinshon Judkins. Judkins was selected two slots ahead of Henderson on Friday by the Cleveland Browns.
Henderson ran a 4.43 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in March, marking an elite time for a player whose game tape backs up this number.
Henderson joins a running back room with veteran running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson. Stevenson had a bad year in 2024 fumbling the ball after signing a four-year contract extension last year, and Gibson was unable to find consistent footing in a struggling Patriots offense in his first season with the team.
With the Patriots improving their offensive line on day one of the draft by selecting left tackle Will Campbell fourth overall, they’re now attempting to improve the stable of running backs behind a unit that needs to improve in 2025.
At the time of publishing, the Patriots are slated to be on the clock two more times on Friday, as they’re slotted to pick at No. 69 and 77 in the third round.
The Patriots’ second pick in the third round comes via their trade with Atlanta last summer, which sent Pro Bowl defensive end Matthew Judon to the Falcons ahead of the 2024 regular season.
