Walmart wants its employees to use a new internal app while they are at work and to make the process more seamless, the retail giant is planning to give away hundreds of thousands of smartphones to its staff.
According to CNN, Walmart will give Samsung smartphones to 740,000 employees, or around half of its workforce in the United States, that they can use to access its new employee app Me@Walmart.
Employees will be allowed to use their Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro smartphones, which retail for $499, for non-work purposes and will receive both a case and a protection plan as well.
The app features a voice-activated personal assistant that can be used to “quickly locate merchandise and get answers for customers” as well as functions that allow employees to clock into their shifts as soon as they arrive at the store and manage their schedules up to two weeks in advance.
In a press release, Walmart said that its app can only be accessed by employees while they are on the clock and that it will not access personal data on smartphones.
In a case of life imitating art, a 2020 “Superstore” episode explored the possibility of a big box chain creating an app for its employees.
After the CDC announced in mid-May that fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks indoors, Walmart indicated that “vaccinated customers and members are welcome to shop without a mask,” noting that people who are not vaccinated will still be asked to wear face masks in their stores.
Walmart customers are also able to get COVID-19 tests and vaccinations at their more than 5,100 pharmacy locations nationwide.
All Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacy locations nationwide are now accepting walk-in vaccine appointments, as supply allows, in addition to pre-scheduled appointments.
