A Massachusetts woman believed the pain she was feeling was due to kidney stones and hours later gave birth to her first child without previously knowing she was pregnant.
On the morning of March 8th, Melissa Surgecoff began experiencing cramping and when the pain intensified she believed she was passing a kidney stone.
"The only relief I would get was sitting on the toilet," the 38-year-old told “Today.” "So I was in the bathroom, and I ... couldn't sit still. I was screaming, I was trying not to be loud like I didn't know what this was."
Unaware she was undergoing childbirth, Melissa felt something release from her body and assumed it was the stone or possibly something more serious.
"I look in the toilet and I still didn't know what it was," she added. "And I thought I basically lost an organ because I didn't know!"
Melissa called out to her fiancé Donnie Campbell as she realized it was a human being.
"I'm screaming, I'm freaking out, I'm in shock," she continued. "I don't know what's going on, and Donnie went to the toilet, and he rescued the baby."
After EMT arrived, Melissa and baby Liam were taken to the hospital and it was determined the unexpected bundle of joy was healthy.

Despite being shocked by his arrival, Melissa now admits there were signs she was carrying a child for nine months.
"Looking back at it now there were clear-cut signs I was pregnant," she told USA Today. "I had swollen feet, weight gain, heartburn, and if I put all the signs together I would have known."
While the new parents had to postpone their 2020 wedding due to the pandemic, they now plan to marry on June 18th.
"This is our first and probably last child," Donnie told the outlet.
