·“Ted Lasso” returns for its fourth season Wednesday on Apple TV, more than three years after the show appeared to wrap up its story with Ted leaving England and returning home to Kansas.
·Jason Sudeikis is back as Ted, but he will not return to coach AFC Richmond’s men’s team.
·Rebecca brings him back to lead the club’s newly formed second-division women’s team, known as the Lady Greyhounds.
·The new direction was inspired in part by the rapid growth of women’s sports.
·Sudeikis said he and his family became season-ticket holders for the WNBA’s New York Liberty, and the energy he saw around the players and the league convinced him there was another story worth exploring.
·The show will once again place Ted in unfamiliar territory. He already had to learn English soccer during the original series. Now, he must build a team with a new roster, different challenges and fewer resources than Richmond’s established men’s program.
·Several fan favorites return, including Rebecca, Keeley, Roy Kent, Coach Beard and Higgins.
·The season also introduces a large group of new characters connected to the women’s team.
·Many of Richmond’s original players have not been confirmed as regular cast members. Jamie Tartt, Nate, Sam, Dani Rojas, Isaac and Colin are among the characters whose involvement remains unclear, although surprise appearances are still possible.
·The return is a gamble because season three gave nearly every major character an ending. Ted went home to be closer to his son, Roy took over Richmond, Rebecca found happiness and Coach Beard stayed in England.
·Season four will include 10 episodes, matching the length of the show’s first season. One episode premieres Wednesday, followed by a new episode each week through October 7.
